  • Todavía no puedo ir a casa –dijo Toni–.

LAURA’S GIFT

It was Christmas Eve. Mom had already done all the shopping for the Christmas Eve dinner. Laura was very happy, thinking what a good time she would spend tonight with Laura and Nacho. They were her favorite cousins and they would have dinner at home.

Laura was so happy with her mother that she had not realized they were already going through the park. She only felt cold and a few drops of snow water that made her nose completely red. Laura took this time to wrap herself more with the long scarf her grandmother had given her. It was a beautiful scarf, warm as sheep’s wool and velvety soft. “It was the most beautiful scarf I had ever had!” When she put it on, she did not know why, but she always thought of the grandmother she loved so much.

But when they were about to leave the park, Laura’s mom squeezed her hand and said,

– Look Laura it’s Toni, the boy we always meet in the park, he’s greeting you.

Laura had not even noticed that Toni was there, at her side, looking at her with his big black eyes …. Despite the cold of the wind and the snow water that was now falling harder, Toni was barefoot and his gown barely covered his pants full of patches.

– Hi Toni! … It’s so cold! Why don’t you go home? You’ll be warmer there and your mom will dress you in heavier clothes – Laura’s mom said to her.

– I can’t go home yet – Toni said – My parents will not have been back from work yet and until they arrive…

Laura stared at the boy: she thought she had to do something …. But what?

It was then that she came up with a great idea. She reached into her Mom’s purse and started searching. Surely there she would find those scissors that her mother always had. In fact, she soon found them. She took them very carefully so as not to hurt herself and then began to take off her beautiful scarf. It was so long that it went around her neck several times. She took half of the scarf and began to cut it … .. Chac, chac, chac … ..

When she finished cutting, she offered the huge piece of scarf to Toni. She put it around his neck, kissed him, and said, -This is my Christmas present!-

Toni was shocked, he did not know how to thank his friend. He looked at her with his large black eyes and smiled kindly.

When he started walking again in the park, Toni felt very good, very happy. He put his hands on the scarf and felt it to be velvet-like and warm, like the wool of sheep.

Since that day, every time Toni puts on his scarf, his heart is filled with joy. That scarf is worth more than all the treasures of the world. There is no money that can buy it; it’s simply Laura’s gift.
